Former Penn State football stars Aaron Maybin and Derrick Williams had superb Pro Days on Wednesday, raising their stock about six weeks before the 2009 NFL Draft. Both had had disappointing showings at the combine in February. Now, about a month later, they are on the rise once more.
"It was a good day," Maybin said outside Holuba Hall afterward. "I know my athletic ability and I know what I'm capable of. I put some numbers on the board that are indicative of the kind of player I am."Maybin, the redshirt sophomore DE that broke out during the 2008 season, improved in three specific and important physical areas. He ran his fastest 40-yard dash, completing the event in 4.53 seconds which is a full 0.25 seconds faster than a month ago. He increased his vertical and broad jumps by two inches, from 38 to 40, and six inches, 10' 4" to 10' 10", respectively. Maybin's agent - former Penn State WR Chafie Fields - has said that almost every NFL team has shown some interest in the proclaimed "freak of nature".
Former WR Derrick Williams showed the speed that everyone knew he had by running the 40 in a blazing 4.37 seconds. He ran a slow 4.65 seconds at the combine but was suffering from the flu at the time. Williams also was able to bench the standard 225 pounds 18 times, three more times than he mustered in Indianapolis.
"He did exceptionally," Fields said. "He helped himself."Scouts from all 32 NFL teams were in attendance as well as a head coach, John Fox of the Carolina Panthers. There were reportedly at least 18 PSU players working out. Maybin met after the workout with the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. The trio of senior wideouts - Williams, Deon Butler, and Jordan Norwood - will be in a private workout with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday in State College.-- Chafie Fields, former PSU WR and agent for Derrick Williams
